Encompassing both sculpture and moving image Julie Warwel’s work delves into the relational intricacies between physical bodies and (their) images on screen. Made from aluminum, the five works shown in the exhibition my body is a temple borrow techniques from vintage car body construction. Flat sheets are rolled, bent, and hammered into space-hugging surfaces. The resulting sculptures are reminiscent of oversized, long-grown fingernails that once were part of a body but have since become unwieldy and detached. Outgrowing their original context, the series reinterprets superficiality by negotiating not a behind, but an in-between of embodiment and imagination.
