Inspired by the 150-meter-long air cushion roof of the shopping center „Marler Stern,“ the artist transformed and scaled down the enormous yet airy structure into a gelatin cast. This transformation shifts the perception of the form from industrial to human-like. Fluid, fragile, wobbly, yet solid and heavy, „Sternchen“ retains the essence of the original structure while embodying its opposite. To create the gelatin cast, Barbara Mährlen first constructed the form out of wood. A year later, still thinking about the construction and maintainance of large buildings like the „Marler Stern“, she was inspired to reflect on the creation and upkeep of her own work. This contemplation led to assigning „Halbes Holz Sternchen“ as it‘s own artwork, essential for the gelatin cast but distinguished by its own unique qualities.
