Barbara Lüdde‘s practice consists mainly of figu- rative drawing but she also works with installati- on, sound, animation and objects. Her filigree and highly-detailed drawings are made with ink and brush on paper. In them, she presents fictional cha- racters who are experimenting with their gender and identity construction, struggling to find their place within their social environments in an icono- graphic manner. Social codes – like clothes, poses, accessories, hairstyles, tattoos and patches – and fleeting trends from youth groups and subcultu- res become her protagonists. In Bricolage man- ner, a diverse assemblage of cultural references combine to create a new whole. Barbara Lüdde is researching the creation of “self” amidst the capitalistic world order – between appropriation and alienation, between inner and outer powers which constantly play on individuals. Her figures come across fearlessly strong and at second glan- ce, deeply fragile, torn between pressures.
