In the ongoing series "On Route" (since 2021), Lukas Liese analyzes a street near Carrara that was planned and developed by Michelangelo for accessing a new marble quarry. Michelangelo believed that this quarry held marble of exceptional quality. The marble reliefs created by Liese, etched into stone sourced from the exact same mountain, draw attention to the often overlooked thoughts and actions of Michelangelo that laid the groundwork for highly industrialized processes in marble quarrying.
Liese walked Michelangelo‘s road to his quarry multiple times, capturing screenshots of Google Maps on his phone, which he later transferred onto stone. One relief also depicts a screenshot with the shortest route from the artist‘s studio at the end of Michelangelostraße in Prenzlauer Berg to Michelangelo‘s road in the mountains of Carrara.
